Alexander Fernandes

Year of Call: 2023

Alexander joined chambers as a pupil in September 2024. During his second six he has accepted instructions in employment, personal injury, consumer finance, and commercial matters.

During pupillage, under the supervision of Jonathan Butters, Alexander assisted Rob Weir KC, Jonathan Butters, and Thomas Westwell resisting the appeal to the Supreme Court in Johnson v FirstRand Bank Limited (t/a MotoNovo Finance) - one of The Lawyer's "Top 10 appeals of 2025". Alexander has since represented several claimants in hearings concerning motor-finance commissions.

Alexander is presently instructed (led by Richard Harrison) on two insurance matters.

Alexander was also supervised by Jesse Crozier and Josh Carey. He assisted both in the preparation of advice, pleadings, and written submissions in the employment and tax tribunals.  His employment experience involved: social media use; discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation; trade union detriment; restraint of trade; and termination of an officeholder.

Alexander's experience of personal injury work has primarily involved traumatic brain injuries (sustained by adults and children), and mesothelioma. He has been involved in joint settlement meetings and independent expert valuations. During his second six, Alexander has taken on claimant and defendant personal injury work. He recently obtained judgment for a claimant equal to their Protocol offer, securing them a consequential uplift in the award of damages and costs.

Alexander is a former chartered accountant with almost a decade of experience working for a 'big four' firm in its Banking practice - a period that encompassed the global financial crisis. He left accountancy to take up a position in the Bank of England's Prudential Policy Directorate to work on post-crisis banking reform - and subsequently worked on the ramifications of 'Brexit'.

As a result of his extensive professional experience, Alexander has real-world experience of employment practices in the private and public sector and excellent commercial awareness. His numerical fluency is of particular assistance in the context of remedies - whether drafting or evaluating schedules of loss, or dealing with cash flow analysis associated with rescission. Alexander's professional services background has also instilled in him a constructive and responsive approach to engaging with his professional and lay clients.

Alexander completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Law at the University of Law, attaining distinction level marks in every subject and earning a Dean's Award. He also attained a distinction in his Bar Vocational Studies which he completed at City Law School.
