Josh joined Devereux as a tenant in October 2024 following successful completion of his pupillage. He has a wide-ranging practice across all of Chambers’ core practice areas, including employment, tax, personal injury and commercial litigation. He is regularly instructed in multi-day hearings and has a busy advisory practice.

Having graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in Arabic and Spanish, Josh completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Law and Bar Vocational Studies at City, University of London, achieving a Distinction in both courses. While completing his legal studies, he competed successfully in mooting competitions and won numerous legal essay prizes.

Before coming to the Bar, Josh gained experience as a volunteer advocate for the Free Representation Unit, representing clients in the Employment Tribunal. He also acted as a volunteer with the Company Insolvency Pro Bono Scheme in the High Court and with the Schools Consent Project. Additionally, he was invited to give lectures and supervisions in advocacy skills to LLB and GDL students at City, University of London, while completing his vocational studies.

  • Employment and Industrial Relations

    Josh practises in all areas of employment and industrial relations law, acting on behalf of both claimants and respondents. He regularly appears in the Employment Tribunal, successfully acting as sole counsel in multi-day final hearings, as well as in preliminary hearings. Josh is also building a busy advisory practice.

    Recent highlights include:

    • Successfully representing a recruitment company at the eight-day final hearing of a pregnancy and maternity discrimination and automatically unfair dismissal claim.
    • Led by Andrew Burns KC, advising a leading hospitality company on holiday pay following changes to the Working Time Regulations 1998.
    • Successfully representing a major multinational retailer at the final hearing of an unfair dismissal claim.
    • Successfully representing the claimant at the final hearing of his claim for constructive dismissal and successfully resisting the employer’s subsequent application for a reconsideration.
    • Representing the claimant at the final hearing of her claim for constructive unfair dismissal and unlawful deduction from wages.
    • Representing a leading facilities management company at a preliminary hearing in a disability discrimination claim. Josh successfully argued that the claimant was not disabled for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010.
    • Successfully resisting a claimant’s application to amend his discrimination claim and successfully applying for the complaints to be struck out.
    • Successfully representing a bus company at a Rule 3(10) hearing in the EAT.

    As pupil to Talia Barsam and Marianne Tutin, Josh gained extensive experience in high-value discrimination, unfair dismissal, breach of contract, and equal pay disputes. In particular, Josh provided research and drafting assistance in the EAT cases of Jones v Secretary of State for Health and Social Care [2024] EAT 2 and British Airways plc v De Mello [2024] EAT 53.

    Josh also has experience acting in claims of discrimination in the provision of education in the County Court. 

    Recent highlights include:

    • Drafting a defence to a claim of disability discrimination against a university.
    • Advising a university in relation to a claim of disability discrimination.
    • Successfully applying for strike out of a claim of race discrimination against a university. Josh also successfully resisted the claimant’s appeal against the decision to strike out.
  • Investigations

    Josh has experience carrying out investigations into grievances raising serious allegations of discrimination, harassment and workplace bullying, including for major multinational companies.

    Examples of recent investigations include complaints regarding:

    • Pregnancy and maternity discrimination.
    • Discrimination and bullying by management.
    • Sexual harassment of an employee.
    • Victimisation and whistleblowing detriment.
  • Tax

    Josh is developing a busy practice in direct and indirect tax, acting on behalf of both taxpayers and HMRC.

    Recent highlights include: 

    • Eastern Power Networks plc v HMRC [2025] UKFTT 703 (TC). Successfully acting for the Revenue (led by David Ewart KC and Marika Lemos KC) in an appeal concerning the application of the ‘consortium relief’ provisions in the Corporation Tax Act 2010.
    • Tyler Security Ltd v HMRC [2025] UKFTT 1250 (TC). Successfully acting for the Revenue (led by Christopher Stone KC) in an appeal concerning the application of the agency provisions in the Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003 to specialist security dog handlers.
    • Acting for the Revenue (led by Adam Tolley KC and Marika Lemos KC) in a high-value dispute concerning an alleged labour supply fraud.
    • Assisting a KC with research into the taxation of damages.

    As pupil to Marika Lemos KC, Josh assisted on a wide range of direct and indirect tax matters, including in relation to the tax affairs of high-net-worth individuals, the hypothetical officer

    test, the loan charge, the availability of loss relief and the VAT exemption for leasing or letting of immovable property.

  • Personal Injury

    Josh regularly acts for both claimants and defendants in a range of matters, including road traffic accidents, employers’ liability, occupiers’ liability and travel illness claims. Josh has appeared in numerous fast track trials and regularly represents clients in CCMCs and infant approval hearings.

    Recent instructions include:

    • Successfully representing the claimant in a multi-track quantum trial arising out of an RTA.
    • Acting for the claimants (led by Stephen Cottrell) in an ongoing travel illness claim involving a large number of claimants. Josh assisted in drafting the particulars of claim.
    • Representing the claimant at a CCMC in a multi-track claim arising out of a multi-vehicle RTA.
    • Drafting particulars of claim in an employers’ liability / occupiers’ liability claim. The claimant had sustained spinal injuries while working on scaffolding.
  • Consumer Credit and Commercial Litigation

    Josh welcomes instructions in all areas of consumer credit and commercial litigation. He has particular experience in motor finance commission and PPI claims and regularly represents consumers in the County Court.

    During pupillage, Josh provided research assistance to Robert Weir KC, Jonathan Butters, and Thomas Westwell in relation to Johnson & ors v FirstRand Bank Ltd & ors [2024] EWCA Civ 1282.
