Andrew Burns QC gives evidence to joint Select Committees on P&O Ferries
Andrew Burns QC gave evidence today to the joint Transport Committee and Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee on the employment and industrial relations obligations of employers when mass redundancies are contemplated. The Committees investigated the legality of P&O Ferries’ decision to dismiss 800 workers and replace them with agency workers, and the wider implications for UK employment law. Andrew answered questions about the duties of employers to consult workers’ representatives, give notice to appropriate authorities, avoid discrimination and TUPE related claims and payment of national minimum wage to seafarers.
Andrew (supported by Marianne Tutin) spoke alongside Professor Alan Bogg of the University of Bristol and Professor Jason Chuah of City Law School. The joint Committees also heard from unions, executive agencies, P&O and its parent company DP World, and the responsible ministers.
